About Cedar Rapids

A river city with a working economy.

Cedar Rapids is the county seat of Linn County, about 20 miles north of Iowa City. Collins Aerospace and CRST have big operations here, Aegon has its US headquarters here, and the Quaker Oats mill still runs downtown on the river.

Housing spans every era: about 14% of homes were built before 1940 and about 22% since 2000. That means older homes near downtown and the river, and newer subdivisions farther out.

Around town
NewBo

The New Bohemia district southeast of downtown, home to the NewBo City Market and restaurants and venues along the river.

Czech Village

Along 16th Avenue SW, home to the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library.

Brucemore

A 26-acre estate with an 1880s Queen Anne mansion, now a National Trust for Historic Preservation site.

Cedar River Trail

Runs through the city and connects north to the Cedar Valley Nature Trail in Hiawatha.

Before you buy here
Check the flood map first.

The 2008 flood crested at a record 31.12 feet and reached about 14% of the city. The flood control system is still being built: the NewBo and Czech Village sections were finished in 2025, and other stretches are still to come.

For any home near the river, look up the flood zone and get an insurance quote before you offer. The school district also changes the tax rate, so I pull the current tax bill on every home. Buying to rent it out? Cedar Rapids requires rental registration and inspections, covered on the investor page.
