Hiawatha
A small city on Cedar Rapids' north side, with its own parks and a trailhead for the Cedar Valley Nature Trail.
Typical times without traffic, from OpenStreetMap routing. Rush hour runs longer.
Small city, long trail.
Hiawatha was incorporated in 1950 at the urging of Fay Clark and took its name from his trailer company. It sits on the north side of Cedar Rapids, inside the same metro area.
Its housing is newer than most: the typical home was built in the mid-1980s. Most new building is on the north side, around Prairielight Drive and Edgewood Road, with single-family homes and townhomes.
Trailhead on Boyson Road, with just under 52 miles of trail north to Evansdale.
Splash pad, ball diamonds, courts and a paved walking loop, plus the Sunday farmers market from May to October.
Memorial park with an 18-hole disc golf course.
A connector runs south from Hiawatha onto the Cedar River Trail in Cedar Rapids.
Hiawatha and Cedar Rapids share a long border, and which side a home sits on decides its taxes and which city's rules apply. Most of Hiawatha is in the Cedar Rapids Community School District, but part is in Alburnett, where the 2026-27 rate is about $37.38 per $1,000 instead of $35.54.
I confirm the city, the school district and the current tax bill on every home we look at.
